Tinplate is an iron tin alloy, which is tinned.

It is mainly used for consumer food packaging iron boxes and cans. As the tinplate separates the strength of steel and the corrosion resistance, solderability and aesthetics of tin in materials, it has corrosion resistance, non-toxic, high strength and ductility.

Tins are classified by thickness and tin plating amount. Generally speaking, in order to save costs, the current industrial consumption will reduce the thickness of iron and tin coatings, while ensuring a solid packaging strength.

One is to use less tin, or even no tin (chrome plated iron). From the development of hot dip tinplate in the 1950s to electroplating tinplate today, China has not seen the use of hot dip tinplate in cans.

The second is to reduce the thickness of tinned substrate. This is a common wish. At present, 0.15 m/m tinplate has been used to make lids in China. Some cold rolling sheet companies have announced that they can consume 0.12 m/m cold rolling sheet for the cap industry. Therefore, the secondary cold rolling thin substrate high hardness tinplate is the development direction of the can (lid) industry.
